Ed Stanley
Ed Stanley is a partner specialising in insurance and reinsurance matters.
After studying modern history at Oxford, Ed joined Elborne Mitchell originally as a trainee. He was first appointed a partner in the firm in 1989 and following an 8 year spell as a partner at another leading City practice, returned to Elborne Mitchell in 2007.
Ed's expertise extends to all aspects of civil litigation, especially the handling and management of complex disputes. It is however in the areas of insurance and reinsurance litigation and arbitration that he is probably best known. In recent times, he acted in IRB v CX Re (2010), concerning the “double proviso” follow settlements clause in excess of loss reinsurance, and AXL Resources Ltd v Antares (2011), concerning a “mysterious disappearance” exclusion in a Lloyd’s marine cargo policy. He acts on a number of matters involving the insurance aspects of film and TV productions.
Other recent activities include advising and setting up investor action groups affected by failed French leaseback developments and advising on contentious planning matters.
Ed is a regular speaker at insurance market events and contributor to market publications. He has a reputation for cutting through the legal niceties in explaining what practitioners need to know.
In his spare time, he plays keyboards in the Rawhides, a Blues Brothers tribute band, and the Rendez-Vous Band, which is comprised of individuals involved in the insurance run-off market. Credits also include writing the background music for a programme shown on BBC2 and for a comedy show based upon a cartoon character in the “Beano”.
